The third week of March is Poison Prevention Week. This year, as part of educating kids about poisons, teach them about the dangers of taking prescription and over-the-counter medicines without adult supervision. Research shows that many young kids think that those great-tasting vitamins and cough syrups, as well as colorful prescription pills, are candy—often with disastrous results. The Danger Rangers Web site will help teachers and caregivers get this important message across in an entertaining way.
From the home page, click on the “Videos” television graphic at the top of the page, then click the 2 on the remote control to play a 30-minute cartoon titled “Medicine Mix Up.” For classroom tie-ins, click on the “Resources” link at the top of any page, then “Educator Resources.” Here you’ll find three free curriculum guides. For more poison prevention topics, click on the yellow “Safety Info” screen. There’s also a ton of information on many other important topics (fire safety, bike safety, bathroom safety, hearing loss prevention, and emergency preparedness, just to name a few). Don’t forget to recommend this site to parents!

Websites I found interesting (weekly)
The Monkey Business game for sentence word order and others on this site develop early language and reading skills using activities and interactives full of rich stories and characters to engage students in learning adventures. It is part of the Earobics series from Houghton Mifflin which teaches the foundation of literacy and reading skills that are building blocks for many state curricula. You need not use this series to benefit from the games, however. Monkey Business is one of many activities in the Games Goo section of the Earobics program. The Parent and Teacher pages of Game Goo describe each activity in detail and list the educational standards that are addressed. 20 Things I Learned about Browsers and the Web is a online “book” from Google that describes 20 different things about the internet, web browsers, and online applications. This came to me via my Google Certified Teacher email.

“20 Things…” is a great way to learn more about the internet and WWW and can be used with students to teach them about the internet.
